CHANCE® Helical Underpinning
Restoring Stability from the Ground Up

MaurerCo Retaining Walls installs the CHANCE® Helical Underpinning system, distributed by Foundation Technologies and engineered by Hubbell Power Systems. This solution is designed for structures that have experienced settlement, cracking, or shifting due to inadequate foundational soils or dynamic loading.

How It Works

Underpinning with CHANCE® helical elements involves installing high-capacity piles or piers independent of the existing foundation to depths beyond problematic soil strata. Each element is torque-monitored during installation, and once it reaches the required capacity, it’s bracketed to the existing structure. The load is then transferred from the failing foundation into reliable soil layers below.

Key Benefits

  • Limited-access installation: Suitable for basements, crawlspaces, or confined areas.
  • Immediate loading: Once installed and connected, the structure load may be applied immediately with no lengthy cure times.
  • Minimal disruption: Low vibration, minimal spoil removal, and smaller equipment make this ideal for occupied buildings or sensitive sites.
  • Engineered capacity: Systems are designed based on soil and structural conditions, ensuring a tailored solution for each project.

When to Consider Underpinning

  • Foundations showing signs of settlement, such as cracks in walls or floors, or doors/windows sticking.
  • Structures built over weak soils, fill, or with water intrusion risks.
  • Renovation or addition projects where existing foundations require increased load capacity.
  • Retaining walls or earth-retaining systems that require reinforcement from below.

CHANCE® Helical Piles Foundation Anchor System

CHANCE® Helical Piles are steel foundation elements featuring helical plates welded to a central shaft. As they’re rotated into the soil, the plates pull the pile downward, advancing it to a load-bearing stratum. Once installed, the pile transfers the structural load through weak surface soils into competent bearing layers deep underground.

This screw-like design allows installation in a wide range of soil types, including areas with high groundwater, fill, or poor load-bearing capacity. Each pile is installed using torque-monitored equipment that directly correlates installation torque to load capacity, ensuring every system is verified in real time.

Advantages of CHANCE® Helical Piles

  • Compression & Tension Applications: Suitable for both load-bearing and uplift resistance.
  • Immediate Load Capacity: No concrete curing or delay—foundations are ready to bear weight as soon as installation is complete.
  • Minimal Environmental Impact: No spoils or vibration during installation, making it ideal for sensitive or restricted sites.
  • Cost-Efficient Mobilization: Requires less equipment and setup than driven piles or drilled shafts.
  • Proven Reliability: Used worldwide for decades in commercial, industrial, and residential projects.

ATLAS® Resistance Push Piers

The ATLAS Resistance® system uses hydraulic equipment to push structural-grade steel pier sections vertically into the soil until they reach a firm bearing stratum deep below the surface. As each pier is driven, it is load-tested to verify performance and factor of safety before the structure’s weight is transferred. In many cases, the structure can be gently lifted and realigned as part of the process, correcting settlement issues such as cracked walls or sloping floors.

Key Features

  • Immediate structural support: Once piers reach the bearing stratum and are load-tested, they carry weight without extended cure times.
  • Minimal disruption: The system installs with portable equipment, in limited access spaces, and generates little to no vibration or spoil removal.
  • Engineered, verifiable performance: Piers are tested during installation, providing documented capacity and long-term reliability.
  • Applicable in adverse soil conditions: Designed for underpinning foundations built on expansive clay, poorly compacted fill, or shallow rock layers.

Applications

  • Residential and commercial foundation remediation involving settlement or differential movement.
  • Structural lift applications to restore slabs or footings to original levels.
  • New construction where weak soils require deep underpinning or stabilization.
  • Retrofit projects where excavation is restricted and access is limited.
