CHANCE® Helical Tieback Anchors
High-Capacity Lateral Support for Retaining Systems

MaurerCo Retaining Walls is proud to install the CHANCE® Helical Tieback Anchors: a high-performance system from CHANCE® (manufactured by Hubbell Power Systems and distributed by Foundation Technologies) designed to provide dependable lateral (tieback) support for retaining walls, soldier piles, bulkheads, and other earth-retaining structures.

This tieback anchor is screwed into retained soil until its helical bearing plates reach competent load-bearing strata. As installation progresses, torque is monitored and used to correlate to holding capacity, meaning load capacity is predictable and verifiable on-site. Once installed, the anchor is tension-tested and connected to the wall face via threaded terminations, bearing plates, or embedments, transferring lateral loads safely into the earth.

Helical Anchors (Tension)

These ground‑screw anchors are rotated into the retained soil until the helices bear in competent material. They can be proof‑loaded immediately, require no concrete cure, and install with minimal disturbance, ideal for permanent or temporary retention where access is constrained.

Key Features & Benefits

  • High tension capacity: Anchors can achieve capacities of up to ~200,000 lbs per anchor, depending on soil conditions and configuration.
  • Immediate proof-load capability: No grout cure times or de-watering required — installation, test, and load all on the same day.
  • Minimal disruption: No excavation spoil, less de-watering, fewer large trucks — ideal for constrained sites.
  • Cost-efficient mobilization: Uses standard hydraulic rotary drilling equipment and installs in any weather, keeping labor, equipment, and construction timelines lean.
  • Reusability (for temporary shoring): In temporary wall applications, the anchors can be removed and reused, reducing long-term cost for shoring jobs.

Applications

  • Permanent soil retention systems for high walls, bulkheads, and seawalls
  • Temporary shoring for excavations, trenches, and adjacent structure protection
  • Reinforcement of existing retaining walls experiencing lateral movement or load increases
  • Structural stabilization where site access is limited or soil conditions are challenging

CHANCE® Helical Anchors

CHANCE® Helical Anchors are steel shafts with one or more helical bearing plates welded near the tip. The anchor is rotated into the soil, advancing downward like a screw until the bearing plates reach competent, load-bearing material. Once in place, the system provides immediate uplift and tension resistance. This means there is no excavation, concrete, or cure time required.

These ground screw anchors are ideal for penetrating through soft, loose, or expansive soils to reach stable strata. The result is a precise, code-compliant solution for projects that demand dependable tension performance and minimal site disturbance.

Applications

  • Retaining wall tiebacks and shoring systems
  • Guy anchoring for utility poles and towers
  • Anti-buoyancy restraint for buried structures and tanks
  • Bridge abutments and bulkheads
  • Temporary or permanent earth retention systems

Key Benefits

  • Immediate Load Capacity: Anchors can be tensioned and tested at installation.
  • No Excavation Required: Clean, fast installation with minimal soil disturbance.
  • All-Weather Capability: Installable year-round using lightweight, portable equipment.
  • Cost-Effective: Reduces material, mobilization, and labor expenses compared to cast-in-place solutions.
  • Proven Durability: A system with decades of success in high-performance applications.

CHANCE® Soil Screws

The CHANCE® Soil Screw acts in bearing mode rather than the friction mode used by traditional grouted anchors. Each soil screw is advanced into the earth where its helical bearing plates engage stable soil, creating resistance against movement or collapse. This method allows the construction of permanent or temporary walls quickly and with minimal excavation.

Once installed, a shotcrete face is typically applied to lock the system in place and complete the structural wall. This pairing produces a reliable, gravity-type retaining wall ideal for commercial, residential, and infrastructure applications.

Advantages of CHANCE® Soil Screws

  • Rapid Installation: Faster than conventional soil nailing systems.
  • Cost-Effective: Reduced drilling, grouting, and curing time.
  • Bearing Mode Action: Provides dependable capacity with minimal soil disturbance.
  • Adaptable Design: Works with both temporary and permanent retaining structures.
  • Reduced Equipment Needs: Lightweight and easily installed in tight access sites.

Applications

  • Hillside and slope stabilization
  • Permanent soil retention walls
  • Temporary shoring for excavation sites
  • Bridge abutments, bulkheads, and cut slopes
  • Retaining wall reinforcement with shotcrete facing
